Day 103 Questioning Authority | Mark 11:27-33

Day 103 Questioning Authority | Mark 11:27-33

Send us a text

Have you ever noticed how some people ask questions not to understand, but to trap or undermine? Today's exploration of Mark 11:27-33 reveals a fascinating confrontation where religious authorities challenge Jesus about his authority—not from genuine curiosity, but with hostile intentions.

Jesus responds with brilliant wisdom by posing a counter-question about John the Baptist that exposes their true motives. When forced to consider whether John's baptism came from heaven or human origin, the leaders find themselves in a dilemma: admit the divine source (which validates Jesus) or deny it (and face public backlash). Their non-committal "we don't know" reveals everything about their dishonesty and political calculations.

This powerful scripture reminds us that questioning is healthy when done with sincerity. Jesus doesn't reject questions—he welcomes them from hearts genuinely seeking truth. The passage beautifully distinguishes between institutional religious power and authentic divine authority. While the leaders cling to positions and protocols, Jesus demonstrates authority that comes directly from God.

For us today, this story offers profound comfort. In a world of competing voices claiming authority, Jesus stands unique. His authority isn't just in teaching or healing, but in his power to forgive sins and transform lives. When we acknowledge his divine authority, we open ourselves to genuine spiritual growth. Take time today to reflect on what it means to fully trust Jesus' authority in your life. Is there an area where you're still holding back? What might change if you embraced his leadership completely?

Let's get started.

00:00:19.929 --> 00:00:21.763
And now.

00:00:21.763 --> 00:00:23.408
Weekends with Lauren.

00:00:25.201 --> 00:00:28.350
Today is Day 103, questioning Authority.

00:00:28.350 --> 00:00:33.932
We'll be in Mark, chapter 11, verses 27 through 33 from the New Living Translation.

00:00:33.932 --> 00:00:36.707
Again, they entered Jerusalem.

00:00:36.707 --> 00:00:43.393
As Jesus was walking through the temple area, the leading priests, the teachers of religious law and the elders came up to him.

00:00:43.393 --> 00:00:46.926
They demanded by what authority are you doing all these things?

00:00:46.926 --> 00:00:48.652
Who gave you the right to do them?

00:00:48.652 --> 00:00:52.869
I'll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one question.

00:00:52.869 --> 00:00:58.149
Jesus replied Did John's authority to baptize come from heaven or was it merely human?

00:00:58.149 --> 00:01:01.683
Answer me, they talked it over among themselves.

00:01:01.683 --> 00:01:05.272
If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe John.

00:01:05.272 --> 00:01:07.828
But do we dare say it was merely human?

00:01:07.828 --> 00:01:12.772
For they were afraid of what the people would do because everyone believed that John was a prophet.

00:01:12.772 --> 00:01:15.549
So they finally replied we don't know.

00:01:15.549 --> 00:01:20.111
And Jesus responded then I won't tell you by what authority I do these things.

00:01:20.111 --> 00:01:22.484
This is so good.

00:01:23.900 --> 00:01:27.765
This is a Sunday episode of Weekends with Me, lauren.

00:01:27.765 --> 00:01:37.715
Today's passage is pretty interesting because the religious leaders, chief priests, teachers and elders challenge Jesus, but not because they really want to learn.

00:01:37.715 --> 00:01:39.906
They're actually just trying to trap him.

00:01:39.906 --> 00:01:41.706
Honestly, it's kind of sad.

00:01:41.706 --> 00:01:46.311
They had the chance to ask real questions, but instead their hearts were already closed off.

00:01:46.311 --> 00:01:54.328
But here's the good news it's actually okay to ask Jesus, who gives you authority, as long as our hearts genuinely want to know.

00:01:54.328 --> 00:01:58.290
Jesus doesn't get upset with us for asking sincere questions.

00:01:58.290 --> 00:02:00.438
He wants us to seek and understand.

00:02:01.341 --> 00:02:09.031
In a world full of confusing messages and lots of different voices claiming authority, jesus makes it very clear who he is and why we should listen.

00:02:09.031 --> 00:02:12.581
Jesus shows us that his authority comes from God.

00:02:12.581 --> 00:02:18.300
He has the power not just to teach and heal, but to forgive our sins and to give us new life.

00:02:18.300 --> 00:02:20.585
That's a powerful truth to hold on.

00:02:20.585 --> 00:02:25.594
To Take some time today to think about what it means to trust in Jesus's authority.

00:02:25.594 --> 00:02:31.913
Are you ready to fully follow him, trusting that his authority is exactly what your life needs?

00:02:31.913 --> 00:02:36.586
Pray with me, dear Jesus.

00:02:36.586 --> 00:02:42.485
Thank you for showing me that your authority comes from God and for using the authority to forgive and restore.

00:02:42.485 --> 00:02:45.171
Help me follow you with confidence and joy.

00:02:45.171 --> 00:02:45.894
Amen.

00:02:45.894 --> 00:02:49.025
That's all for now.
