Day 106 Laid in the Tomb | Mark 15:40-47

Day 106 Laid in the Tomb | Mark 15:40-47

Send us a text

Have you ever stood at a distance, watching something significant unfold without fully engaging? That's where we find several faithful women in Mark's account of Jesus' burial—present, but at a distance.

Mark 15:40-47 introduces us to Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, Salome, and many other women who had followed Jesus from Galilee. These devoted disciples watched the crucifixion from afar and witnessed where Joseph of Arimathea laid Jesus' body. Their presence speaks volumes about faithfulness in dark moments. Meanwhile, Joseph emerges as an unexpected hero—an "honored member of the high council" who risks everything to provide Jesus a dignified burial. His actions required tremendous courage as he approached Pilate and requested the body, then carefully wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in his own rock-hewn tomb.

This passage confronts us with a powerful question that reverberates across two millennia: Who is Jesus to you? Are you watching passively from a distance, or will you draw near and respond with genuine faith? The women and Joseph moved beyond mere observation to devoted action. Their example challenges us to examine our own response to Jesus—not just acknowledging him from afar, but stepping closer to see clearly who he truly is.

Join us as we explore this pivotal moment between crucifixion and resurrection, and consider what it means to move from being spectators to faithful followers. Subscribe to Wisdom for the Day for daily spiritual refreshment that will help you embrace each day with renewed faith and purpose.

Let me help you embrace each day with faith and wisdom, ready to feel inspired.

00:00:19.484 --> 00:00:21.070
Let's get started.

00:00:23.481 --> 00:00:33.875
Today is Day 106, laid in the Tomb, from the Gospel of Mark, chapter 15, verses 40 through 47, from the New Living Translation.

00:00:33.875 --> 00:00:45.155
Some women were there watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, mary, the mother of James the Younger, and of Joseph and Salome.

00:00:45.155 --> 00:00:49.850
They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he was in Galilee.

00:00:49.850 --> 00:00:54.090
Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there.

00:00:54.090 --> 00:00:58.408
This all happened on Friday, the day of preparation.

00:00:58.408 --> 00:01:07.040
The day before the Sabbath, as evening approached, joseph of Arimathea took a risk and went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.

00:01:07.040 --> 00:01:13.182
Joseph was an honored member of the high council and he was waiting for the kingdom of God to come.

00:01:13.182 --> 00:01:20.281
Pilate couldn't believe that Jesus was already dead, so he called for the Roman officer and asked if he had died.

00:01:20.281 --> 00:01:26.153
Yet the officer confirmed that Jesus was dead, so Pilate told Joseph he could have the body.

00:01:26.153 --> 00:01:37.191
Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth and then he took Jesus' body down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth and laid it in the tomb that had been carved out of the rock.

00:01:37.191 --> 00:01:40.025
Then he rolled a stone in front of the entrance.

00:01:40.025 --> 00:01:45.307
Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joseph, saw where Jesus' body was laid.

00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:51.132
Now we learn in this passage about several women who witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus.

00:01:51.132 --> 00:01:59.450
Mary Magdalene, another Mary and Salome watched from a distance, along with many other women who had followed Jesus from Galilee.

00:01:59.450 --> 00:02:03.530
Some even stayed to see exactly where Jesus was buried.

00:02:03.530 --> 00:02:08.771
Have you ever wondered how they must have felt as they watched all these things unfold?

00:02:08.771 --> 00:02:17.872
These women had been there as Jesus healed the sick, taught crowds and brought hope to so many people.

00:02:17.872 --> 00:02:22.050
Now they had to watch him suffer, die and be laid in a tomb.

00:02:22.050 --> 00:02:24.287
It must have been heartbreaking.

00:02:24.287 --> 00:02:34.391
Today, you and I are observers of these events as well, though from much further away, separated by 2,000 years.

00:02:34.391 --> 00:02:41.562
We've read about Jesus' miracles and heard his teachings, and now we've witnessed through the scriptures, his suffering, death and burial.

00:02:42.525 --> 00:02:43.787
How do you respond to this?

00:02:43.787 --> 00:02:49.643
This is the critical question who is Jesus to you?

00:02:49.643 --> 00:02:52.106
It's our turn to answer.

00:02:52.106 --> 00:03:00.646
Will we watch passively from afar, or will we step closer, see clearly and respond to him with faith.

00:03:00.646 --> 00:03:05.332
Take a moment today to consider your response to Jesus.

00:03:05.332 --> 00:03:07.536
He invites you closer.

00:03:07.536 --> 00:03:13.209
Won't you come Pray with me, dear Jesus?

00:03:13.209 --> 00:03:15.933
Help me not to just watch from afar.

00:03:15.933 --> 00:03:22.112
Draw me close so I can clearly see that you truly are the Son of God.

00:03:22.112 --> 00:03:27.772
I pray that my heart responds in faith and gratitude, amen.

00:03:27.772 --> 00:03:36.110
Well, that's all for today, but I'll be back tomorrow with more of God's Word.
