What does it truly mean to follow Jesus? Day 94 of our journey through Mark's Gospel brings us face-to-face with misguided ambition and the profound nature of discipleship. 

We explore Mark 10:35-40, where James and John approach Jesus with a bold request: "When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you." Their desire for status and recognition reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of Jesus' mission. Rather than harshly rebuking them, Jesus responds with gentle questions about suffering and sacrifice, challenging them to reconsider what following him really entails.

This powerful exchange reminds us that discipleship isn't about gaining special privileges or comfortable positions. Jesus redirects our attention from seeking honor to embracing surrender. The brothers confidently claimed they could share in Jesus' suffering without truly understanding what lay ahead - much like many of us when we first commit to following Christ.

The passage challenges us to examine our own motivations. Are we following Jesus for what we might gain, or are we truly surrendering to his leadership regardless of where it takes us? True discipleship means joining Jesus in his mission of redemption and renewal, which often involves sacrifice rather than status.

The disciples James and John wanted special honor in Jesus' kingdom, but Jesus gently redirected their thinking.

He asked them if they were prepared to share in the same hardships that he would face.

Though they quickly answered yes, we can, they didn't fully understand what Jesus meant and they had no real idea of the suffering and sacrifice ahead.

When Jesus calls us to follow him, we also can't fully know what lies ahead.

Following Jesus isn't about seeking personal honor or comfort.
